Basement Fire in Cheltenham Pub

The Bayshill Pub was evacuated at 19:00 GMT after a fire started in the basement on 5th January 2014. Four fire engines and 20 firefighters rushed to the scene to tackle the blaze, according to the Gloucestershire Echo. Nobody is believed to have been injured in the fire, which started in the fuse board in the cellar.

Firefighter Dave Pike, a station commander, told the Gloucestershire Echo: "There has been a fire in the fuse board in the cellar. We have a team down there at the moment trying to stop it from spreading. We have not inspected it but no serious damage is thought to have been caused. We are dampening it down at the moment."

Police closed the street between the St George's Road and St James' Square junctions until around 22:00 GMT. Nick Phillips, an eyewitness who lives near the pub, said: "No flames are visible but there has been a lot of smoke pouring from the building and lots of firefighters with breathing equipment."

He added that the road was quickly closed off by the police and that there were emergency vehicles the scene.

Another eyewitness, Paul Watson, who was walking past the pub at the time, said he couldn't see any flames but that there was a lot of smoke.

Commercial buildings, non-domestic and multi-occupancy premises in England and Wales are already forced to undertake a 'suitable and sufficient' fire risk assessment carried out under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. While the overwhelming majority of premises do this, if the assessment is thought to have been carried out to an insufficient extent, the Responsible Person can face an unlimited fine or up to two years in prison.
